How do you check into your emotional and physical wellbeing during the balancing act of life? Whether it be of work and play, intention and surrender – the most important balance that people most often forget is that of our own personal inner energy. This is where Reiki healing becomes essential.
When I had my first Reiki treatment, I had no idea what to expect. I was confused with my general direction in life, I was often sick, and felt for lack of better terms, I was stressed about being “lost.” During my treatment, I chose to be completely open, I chose to fully receive, and I chose to just give my all into being accepting of the treatment – and this worked wonders for me.
After, I left with a sense of direction. I was exhilarated, energized, and refreshed – like I had been living my life in a cloud and like a cliche allergy commercial – I felt like my perspective was fresh and clear. Everyone has different experiences, but the common factor is the feeling of moving towards equilibrium – both physical and emotional.
What is Reiki?
Reiki, originating in Japan, literally translates to “universal life energy.” Reiki healing pertains to a spiritual healing technique of energy balancing. We as humans have a natural and unseen life force energy that flows through us, and when we neglect or abuse our life force energy, our physical and emotional health can begin to dwindle.
Reiki practitioners receive training and certification so that they are able to administer these healing powers to themselves and others as both a stress reduction and relaxation process that promotes healing of the body and mind. When the energy within is balanced, your internal body finds harmony that then sends signals to the brain of this harmonious flow. In turn, the brain understands this harmony and the emotions are able to fall into this peaceful cycle.
How Does Reiki Heal?
Think of Reiki like acupuncture without the needles. Acupuncture is a practice that stimulates certain points on the body to alleviate pain and treat health conditions by promoting a response in that region. Reiki, just like acupuncture, does the same. Through yourself or your practitioner, you are able to receive stimulation through the energy centers (chakras), that correlate to both different emotional and physical ailments. When your energy centers are imbalanced, the areas of that energy center become negatively affected. The Reiki practitioner channels energy to balance these areas of your body so that you may work towards the balance your body craves, which in turn helps to heal the physical and emotional ailments of the affected area.
What to Expect
Many seek Reiki for stress relief and equilibrium. What we must understand is that the mind does not solely exist in the brain, but also throughout the body. Our brain sends signals to our organs, or muscles, our nerves, and vice versa. So what should you expect during your Reiki session? A balance of both body and mind – to further achieve full balance through your energy centers from your top of your crown through to the tip of your toes.
In a Reiki session, a fully-clothed recipient may be lying on a treatment table or relaxed in a chair similar to a massage chair. The practitioner then, based on the recipient’s preferences, offers a non-invasive touch on a series of locations of the body from the crown down to the feet. None of this touch is intrusive, nor is it inappropriate – and the practitioner will ask you your preferences. The practitioner can practice the treatment hands-off as well. Relaxing music may be played and of course at all times, before and during the treatment – it is absolutely okay to tell your practitioner if something is working, or if you feel uncomfortable and they will make the adjustments as needed.
This treatment itself is subtle, subjectable, and spiritual – the recipient often receives as they choose to. One may feel warm or cold sensations, pulsations, waves of energy, and other physical responses during the treatment. Most often, one will leave feeling relieved of stress, extremely relaxed, and with a sense of serenity. Some may have an uneventful treatment, but reap the benefits of the healing long after the treatment is finished.
